I have recently found out that giraffes sleep standing up as it would be really hard for them to lie down then get back up quite understandably. This got me thinking about how we as humans go about our lives. Although it is important to rest too, once we slip into an on the whole sedate life, it can be hard for us to have the motivation to get back into doing things again.
During the hardest times in my life, it is hard to motivate myself to do anything particularly recently when I have been consumed by negative thoughts, stopping me from seeing much joy and forgetting what I enjoy to lift me out of that state.
As I have mentioned in previous instalments, once you turn your mindset around, everything can change. This is why I chose to start studying OT because I have felt the positive benefits of having meaningful things to do in my life. A lot of you will know that my last placement was in the lovely Lanarkshire and although I eventually got fed up of the 4o minute drive to and from there everyday, having the car in a new place in Scotland was a good way to explore too! Another example is when I haven’t been allowed to have nail polish on for placement, it would have been a good time for me to do some baking! One final example is when my confidence has been knocked by work environments that I have been in over the past few years, it has shown me what I want to do with my life – to make workplaces more mentally health friendly although I am not sure in what way that I will be able to do that yet.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope that you find it helpful. As always, feel free to get in touch with any questions/feedback/thoughts, I always love to hear it. Stay tuned for the next instalment.
Until next time
Kathryn
