As I have mentioned on several occasions, finding joy can seem impossible when everything seems to be going against you. I have had days recently where I long for easier and happier times which got me thinking about some small, short term things I have done in the past to make those days as joyful as I can.
- Get outside
We’ve all been told before that “fresh air will do you some good.” Until recently, I never knew how true this was! Seeing something other than the four walls of my room always brings on my positive and wise thoughts.
- Look for any opportunity for interaction
These can be small things like using the normal checkout instead of a self-checkout or speaking to someone on the phone instead of texting.Even though this can take up a bit more of my time, any opportunity to hear another human voice when I’m feeling lonely and down usually cheers me up.
- Dig out my nicest outfit to wear to remind myself how beautiful I am
I don’t know if I am the only person who does this but it really does work for me! Putting in a bit more effort with your outfit choice for the day doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. If you’re in the mood for dressing up, then dress up!
- Put in as much effort as possible for happiness
Even if that means walking half an hour to get WIFI, going to the shops to get that one ingredient to finish a meal or travelling a really long way to get to somewhere you really want to see or anything else that seems like too much at first, it will be worth it in the end!
- Give yourself time to relax
It’s a classic but it’s true! It’s understandable particularly in busy periods of life to not want to stop but for me, I can only do your best work when I feel relaxed. Having things to look forward to is also a good motivator so make time for the things you enjoy in the midst of stress (within reason though!)
- Keeping yourself occupied
Although rest is important, keeping occupied is beneficial too. Keep your ears and eyes peeled for things that you can use your time and talents for! I have set myself to do 21 challenges for my 21st this year and I have enjoyed having these to work on as little side projects.
- Having a happy place
Have somewhere where you can either go to in person or in your mind when you’re feeling stressed. Or writing them down or plotting them on a map!
- Have memory aids to hand
Phones don’t just need to be for checking your messages and following what everyone’s dinner plans are! I started a ‘positivity album’ on my phone a few months ago to remind me of good times in my life. I also like to have visual reminders in my room, although now being in a rented flat, I will have to find other inventive ways of doing this!
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you find it helpful. As always, feel free to get in touch with any questions/feedback/thoughts, I always love to hear it. Stay tuned for the next instalment.
Until next time
