I have had this conversation with a few people recently which has made to think about my own view on it. Can a diagnosis be a help or a hinderance? I think I will talk about both sides of this as there can be pros and cons to both. Firstly, I wanted to talk about how it can be helpful to have a diagnosis, particularly for mental health conditions.
As someone who has a diagnosis of anxiety, I have found the benefit of knowing what’s going on internally to make more sense of how I respond to different things externally. Also, it has helped me to find specific information to further understand what I can do to help myself as well as what support is available to me. With that comes the freedom from thinking that you are the only one who feels that way and no one will understand how you feel.
It also helps me not to blame myself when I’m not at my best because I can see the reason behind it, outwith my control a lot of the time. And the fact that it is not permanent once I take positive action.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you find it helpful. As always, feel free to get in touch with any questions/feedback/comments, I always love to hear them. Stay tuned for the next instalment.
Until next time
