Just Keep Swimming? Or Jamaica, We Have a Bobsleigh Team?

I received an email at the end of last week saying that I could progress into the next level of my course although I would have to re-sit the placement module from this year. Although I am not doubting that this is good news, I am still working out what I want to do. As I referred to in Every Giraffe Has its Own Unique Pattern, I have the new information about how my brain works and how I communicate to consider and while I have had some comfort from now knowing this, I am unsure what approach to take towards my future endeavours because of it.

A couple of weeks ago, purely randomly, I picked up Cool Runnings and Finding Dory for entertainment while I had no WIFI in the flat not remembering much about the plots of both films in detail. I didn’t realise how challenged I would be after watching both of them in the same week!

I watched Cool Runnings first, which if you haven’t seen it is about a group of Jamaicans, three of which were trying to get into the summer Olympics as sprinters but failed to do so because of one of them tripped over, taking the other two with them. The rest of the film is about those three sprinters plus one other push cart driver trying to be Olympians in another way.

I then watched Finding Dory. Again, a quick summary if you haven’t seen it, Dory is looking for her parents who she lost many years previously but she suffers from short term memory loss and struggles to remember information to help her. However, despite her difficulties, she is able to be reunited with her parents.

The dilemma I’m having at the moment is whether I should have a Dory approach of embracing and celebrating my unique strengths and differences and with support, working around them to carry on doing OT or to have a Cool Runnings approach of looking for a different way to do OT because of things that I am not going to be able to change like how I was made. If I have any more progress with this, I will let you know.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. As always, feel free to get in touch with any questions/feedback/comments, I always love to hear it. Stay tuned for the next instalment.

Until next time

Kathryn

  1. Katherine here’s a thing both films show us. It’s hard work – and there must be joyous moments in the search!! I wonder, are you happy when practicing as an OT? For happy read : in the zone, feeling proud, growing and learning, round peg in round hole???
